Not Getting Recruited? ...

For some high school senior athletes, spring is a time to enjoy the last weeks of school before continuing their athletic career in college.  For many others who have been hoping to land one of those coveted college scholarships, spring is a time to panic.  The phone calls from college coaches have stopped.  Or worse, maybe they never started. Suddenly, the end of an athletic career is staring you in the face.

So, what's a senior athlete to do?  Is all hope lost?

Spring Break.  Use it to Visit College Campuses

With Spring Break around the corner, this is a terrific time of year to maximize upcoming vacation trips with a visit to a close by college campus.  Whether you intend to attend the university where you'll be traveling or not, use a campus visit to help determine what's important to you and what is not.

Keep in mind that over 80% of all collegiate playing opportunities can be found outside the Division I level, and keep in mind that college teams often carry considerably larger rosters than high school teams.  Consequently many very talented players fail to get the playing the time they want and later choose to drop their sport after a year or two.

So when you evaluate a college, look further than just their sports program.  Find a school where you'll be comfortable both with and without sports.  Use the following guidelines to help plan your college visits ...

The NCAA Eligibility Center                                  (formerly the NCAA Clearinghouse)  ...

For those with older brothers and/or sisters who may remember the formerly known NCAA Clearinghouse, be aware that in 2007, it changed names and is now known as the NCAA Eligibility Center. Along with the name change came some important changes in practice.

If you are considering attending an NCAA Division I or II school beginning with the 2010/11 school year, the NCAA also introduced new legislation requiring incoming students to provide ACT and SAT scores directly to the Eligibility Center from the testing agency (it used to be that high schools could send the test scores on official high school transcripts).

If you have any questions, contact either College GAMEplan, your High School College Counselor, or contact the Eligibility Center directly.  For additional information, click on the following link at  https://web1.ncaa.org/eligibilitycenter/student/index_student.html, or visit the NCAA's web site at www.ncaa.org

You must comply with this new legislation.  There are no exceptions.

Your College GAMEplan for March

Things you need to know and be doing in March..

By now, most seniors will either have made their college commitments, or will have narrowed their choices down to the last few colleges.  If you are a senior and still waiting for final financial aid offers, including scholarship, grants, loans, etc., most colleges will be sending their offer letters over the next several weeks.  Be sure to stay up to date with college deadlines that include specific dates for financial aid applications, scholarships applications, housing applications, acceptance deadlines and deposits, etc.  If you are applying for any kind of financial aid, be sure to submit your FAFSA before the college's financial aid deadline.  They vary by school and state so pay close attention to all of them.

While the recruiting process is wrapping up for most seniors, it is really beginning to heat up for juniors.
